Title: Advanced integrated CAD-CAE design techniques in the field of sustainable renewable energy.
Abstract :
Electricity generation is increasingly derived from renewable sources; this trend is expected to further increase in the coming years. The use of renewable and sustainable energy is widely advanced to reduce environmental degradation and significantly limit climate change. Recently, a growing interest is addressed to generating renewable energy through devices (photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, geothermal and marine systems) that are also environmentally sustainable and fully recyclable at the end of their life. An important contribution towards this goal is provided by the most recent integrated CAD-CAE design techniques. Applying these latest techniques, it is possible to create and prototype virtual models that are very similar to real systems by optimising the sustainability of materials used and the recyclability rates.
In this speech some case studies will be discussed with the aim of explaining the potential of integrated CAD-CAE design in the field of sustainable renewable energy. The analysis of thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) focuses on the parametric FE model of photovoltaic panels while the numerical simulations are described to illustrate the optimal materials identification and the choice of the best geometric and dimensional tolerances.
Specifically, the entire set of tools that support product and process Design for Recycling (DfR) and Design for Durability (DfD), is analysed. DfR and DfD, used from early in the concept stage all the way through to product obsolescence, ensure that materials and components are suitable and perform satisfactorily during the intended life. In this way the most up-to-date, efficient, and effective solutions to recycle renewable end-of-life (EoL) devices and a longer service life assurance can be more likely achieved, ensuring the expectations for reliability.
